In our course "Gender, Race and History in the Nation's Capitol," we will use Washington D.C. and the surrounding area as a learning lab, exploring the connections between gender, race and history. Through visits to historical and contemporary locations--including the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the U.S. Capitol Building, Monticello, the White House, and various other national monuments--students will explore how the intersections of patriarchy, racism, and nationalism are imprinted on the physical places that make up our nation's capital.
This course is a collaboration between The Diversity Center and Women’s and Gender Studies program. This is The Diversity Center’s second Alternative Spring Break offered for academic credit Our first collaboration was with Geoscience and Dr. Rose McKenney and focused on Civil Rights and Environmental Justice in Georgia and South Carolina in 2016. We had the opportunity to learn firsthand from organizations working to combat social and environmental injustices in the South and see historical sites that we had only read about before.
This year, we are going to explore the intersections of race and gender within the political, economic, and social context of racism and patriarchy, using our nation’s capital as a text. Through this course, we will have the opportunity to analyze the relationship between history, communities, and power. We will visit the home of Frederick Douglass and the Mary McLeod Bethune House for the Council of Negro Women. Through guided tours, artifacts, and narratives, we will learn about the historical and contemporary legacy of Sally Hemings and her decedents in Monticello. We will visit monuments (on bikes!) such as the Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial and hear the history of the enslaved people who built the White House. And we are truly excited to have the opportunity to visit the Museum of African American History and Culture.
