Led by Carillonist Doris Aman, the University of Rochester Carillon Society is group of students from all different backgrounds that come together to play the Hopeman Memorial Carillon - a set of 50 touch sensitive bells in chromatic sequence played from a baton and pedal keyboard. The bells hang above the crown of Rush Rhees Library, between the top columns of the bell lantern. It is one of only seven carillons in New York State. We perform concerts frequently throughout the year and especially during major University events like New Student Orientation and Meliora Weekend.
Those of us learning to play this valuable and unique world culture instrument practice daily on a carillon practice kit (not linked to the bells), consisting of a keyboard and bench. The carillon practice kit was assembled and programmed by student carillonists - an amazing experience where we put together the hundreds of pieces of the instrument as a team and programmed it with the sounds of bells. Unfortunately, a problem that arose with the practice kit is that it came with an inadequate bench, that is difficult, and sometimes painful, to practice on. In order to get the most out of our practices and ensure better performances for the community, we are seeking to raise $2,700 to purchase a proper, adjustable carillon bench for our practice room!
Ring out the old - The kit bench has several issues with it that makes it difficult to practice on:
Ring in the new - Given that adjustable benches for carillons are rare to find secondhand (our year long search yielded zero results), we must purchase a brand new bench.
We hope to place the order for the bench this fall in order to have it to use by this spring.
With your generous support, the University of Rochester Carillon Society will be able to purchase a new adjustable bench that will assist carillonists, from novices to masters, practicing in the carillon room for decades to come - enabling us to continue to thrive and spread beautiful music throughout the campus community. Thank you in advance for your support!
